STATEMENT
Artist Statement
I am a New Media artist working under the name Nebulosus Severine. My process often combines analog and digital art, integrating elements of virtual reality, 3D design, Internet art, acrylic & oil painting, illustration, digital composition, cellphone photography, printmaking, and various other media.
My artwork attempts to challenge the dominant culture, centering on themes of trauma, violence, power, social issues, and identity. I find inspiration in nature, pop culture, films, current events, and literature. I employ various strategies to re-examine and remix elements and themes, using appropriated materials which are borrowed from both my own artwork and found images/materials on the Internet and elsewhere. I juxtapose motifs of distortion, decay, death with satire, kitsch, pop culture, and memes, assembling experiences that are ominous, surreal, disorienting, disturbing, and/or comically bizarre.
A considerable amount of my virtual art has been created in the user-created online world, Second Life. When working in this multimedia universe, I navigate virtual space through an avatar (digital body), which I consider an integral aspect to the creation I do in that environment. My avatar is a highly-customized, genderless humanoid with a third eye, which has become a constantly evolving stylized self-portrait. Its androgynous features are intended as a confrontation of, and commentary on, gender norms and personal identity in a binary society. My avatar has allowed me to explore avenues of identity that would have been impossible to examine otherwise, and that self-knowledge has greatly informed my work over the last decade.
My Second Life artworks explore the foundations of virtual reality, the concept of the avatar as a stand-in for the physical body, and aspects of personal identity in a variety of media. Central to much of my work’s imagery is the character “Bunnyken,” a collage creature based on a toy with the head of a hybrid bunny/chicken creature and the body of a generic humanoid doll. As an avatar figure, the Bunnyken character has come to represent an enigmatic, generic “everyperson” and thus as a vehicle for exploring identity. Bunnyken has become my avatar’s avatar, further remixing and remediating concepts of personal identity.
I currently work and reside in Tacoma, WA, USA.
The subject of my work is generally about or influenced by:
